10:9' 8/14/2020

Nearly 900,000 candidates across the country have just finished the national high school graduation exam and officially participated in the university, college, intermediate, and primary vocational entrance exam. From here, the threshold of their lives will open up by choosing a profession to study. Students must understand themselves, understand their career when choosing the next path, and vocational education and training is a path to success for the youth.

The survey results of the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs) show that the demands for trained workers with key vocational training are about 815 thousand people in 2021 and about 817 thousand people in 2022. In particular, the demand for recruiting new workers with college degrees is the highest, followed by intermediate and elementary levels. This is an opportunity for candidates who have just passed the national high school graduation exam to take vocational courses to get a job, settle down and have the opportunity to start a business, carry out innovation activities.

Success from the right choice

Graduating from high school in 2018, Tran Thi Thuy Tram, born in 1999, a native of Thua Thien Hue province, chose to major in accounting, Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics to learn a profession. I have clearly defined that my learning goal is to serve myself, so in addition to learning professional knowledge, I also actively participate in union activities, associations and school volunteer activities such as: "Green Sunday" , "Volunteer Saturday", fundraising campaign for "Love to share" volunteer campaign, participated in the seminar "Self-study method" of the Finance-Accounting Department regarding Design Thinking.

Determined from the will to action, during the school years, Thuy Tram always won the title of 5-good student at the school level and won the second prize at the "Young Science Contest 2018-2019 with the theme "Enterprise" with the idea of trading milk tea.

“Employers now need staffs to do a lot of work right after recruiting, not those who have no experiences and need to be retrained. Therefore, I also wish that youngsters who have just graduated from national high school wisely choose a career to study, then find suitable jobs or start a business to both reduce study costs and increase the possibilities to get a job, not necessarily to study in university”, said Tram

Tran Thi Thuy Tram always won the title of 5-good student at the school level and won the second prize at the "Young Science Contest 2018-2019" with the theme "Starting a business" with the idea of a milk tea business.

Like Thuy Tram, who was a good student during 3 years of high school, after graduating, Nguyen Lam Vien, born in 1999, from Long Khanh city, Dong Nai province, also chose Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics to pursue accounting profession.

By clearly defined the study goals to have a job and future life, I determined to study and practice. Thanks to that, I always have excellent academic results in Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics. In the school year 2018-2019, Vien participated in the contest "Students and students in the city with the law" and won the third prize at the city level.

Regarding his career goals, Vien shares his view: “In fact, there are many people around me who do not go to college but still succeed and earn good income, even many successful businessmen in the world did not attend colleges. Having the chance to choose again, I will still continue my apprenticeship, because my choice is on the right track. Therefore, I also hope that young people who have just completed the national high school graduation exam should consider and choose a number of professions that are easy to get a job and have many start-up opportunities, attending colleges is not a must.

Open the path of career

In Vietnam, the number of young people choosing a career path like Thuy Tram and Lam Vien is not many. In particular, many parents want their children to attend colleges and then to find a job. This fact has led to the situation of "redundancy of teachers, shortages of workers" for many years, and at the same time, a very high rate of those who earned bachelor's degrees but cannot get a job.

According to labor experts, Vietnam is in the period of golden population with 96.2 million people, of which 56 millions participate in the work, creating a huge demand for learning, including vocational education and training (VET). In particular, in recent years, many businesses have tended to shift from recruiting human resources with bachelor degrees to recruiting workers with professional, working capacity rather than qualifications.

Notably, in recent years, there are many businesses closely linked with vocational training centers to recruit human resources to meet practical work requirements, and this is also a way to ensure the work opportunities for students.

Some enterprises that actively link and receive vocational trainees to work through associations and businesses such as Vietnam Association of Vocational Education and Social Work, Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Sized Business, Vietnam Tourism Association, Vietnam Retail Association, Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts and Wood Processing Association, Vietnam Young Entrepreneurs Association, Vietnam Logistics Business Association; Muong Thanh Group, BIM Group, ...

Ms. Tran Minh Huyen, Director of Student Affairs Department, Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (MOLISA) said: “In the current rapidly development of Industry 4.0 context, vocational training is growing strong in both size and quality to meet the needs of sustainable development. During that tranformation, students in vocational schools have more and more advantages in high-skilled, fast technology to turn their passions and ideas into reality”.

Accordingly, the key occupations that need to be trained in the period from now to 2025 include: technology, engineering, agriculture, and industry. Especially the industries and occupations that directly serve the 4th Industrial Revolution and 8 groups of fields and occupations that are free to move, including: dentistry, nursing, engineering, construction, accounting, architecture, survey and tourism ...

Fulfill the actual needs of the business

It can be seen that vocational education is an inevitable trend in the national human resource development strategy, contributing to ensuring both quantity and quality of human resources for the labor market. In order to meet the requirements of enterprises and recruiting units, the most essential thing today is to have vocational training according to social needs, teaching must be associated with reality in units and enterprises.

Mr. Truong Anh Dung, Director General of the Directorate of Vocational Education and Training (MOLISA) said that in order for the vocational education to catch up with the current trend of career development and the needs of the society, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has actively upgraded infrastructure, schools and improved the quality of teaching and learning in each school.

Accordingly, with 1,909 vocational education institutions, including 399 colleges; 458 intermediate schools; 1,052 vocational education centers throughout the country have implemented the planning of high-quality school networks and key national, regional and international occupations by each vocational training institution, each region, locality and training level.

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs is also actively innovating training programs, focusing on practical skills. Determining vocational education as "real study, real practice", the Ministry always pays attention on solutions to enhance practical skills for learners, so that after graduation, they can immediately meet the requirements at work.

Accordingly, the time for practice, apprentice, experiments for intermediate level from 55-75% and college level from 50-70% of training time. Many vocational training institutions have arranged in-company study from 25-40% of the time in the training program.

Especially the cooperation with large enterprises and corporations; change the content of the annual admission conference into the entrance conference, organize training and recruitment, and employment. Invite businesses to participate in setting output standards for 160 intermediate and college level occupations with the participation of more than 500 officials, engineers, technicians, experts from enterprises in assessment, job analysis, development and appraisal of outcome standards. To coordinate with ministries and branches in mobilizing enterprises according to their specialized fields to participate in updating and correcting national occupational skill standards.

“The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has been standardizing on the quantity as well as the quality of the expertise and expertise of teachers. Up to now, the proportion of teachers in line with the vocational education goal is training towards competency-oriented, practice and integrated teachers accounting for 76.95% of the total number of teachers. This is a necessary and sufficient condition to improve the quality of vocational education to meet the needs of the current society for labor recruitment”, Mr. Truong Anh Dung emphasized.

According to experts, the current labor structure only needs about 10% of the labors with degrees, 40% of the labors with high professional skills, the rest belongs to the rate of unskilled workers. The shift of young people to apprenticeship trends has shown a change in career-oriented thinking, at the same time that apprenticeship is easier to get jobs, brings high income levels and broadens the career path for young people.
