In the current trend of integration, many high-quality vocational colleges face the pressure on generating human resources with domestic and regional standard. And the schools have to manage with their actual conditions.
Linkage
Teachers, facilities, training programs and mechanisms are 4 barriers for vocational colleges to producing human resources with knowledge and skills. Ho Chi Minh Vocational College of Technology has solved this problem through the projects with overseas partners. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang – School rector said: “Undertaking the projects with Germany, Japan, South Korea..., we cooperated with their strong enterprises.
Technical workers of foreign companies equip students with working skills. Despite language deficiency for listening to their lectures, students have come to learn the skills and professional operation”. To date, the school has organized a number of classes according to Japanese technology programs.

Particularly, in the fields of mechanics, some students have passed the exams and received certificates from Japan, after graduation, Japanese firms invited them to work in Japan with a salary of 1000-2000 USD/month; working at home, the income is 10 million or higher.
Focusing on improving the quality of training is the objective of Hanoi Vocational College of High Technology. Besides equipping students with necessary knowledge and skills to help them enhance qualification, the school also promotes foreign language teaching to help students integrate. “We innovated foreign language program and teaching methods to raise student’s benchmark to TOEIC 350 points instead of 300 points as prescribed.
For vocational fields that are planned to meet international standards, the school invested more equipment to meet the needs for teaching of the staff and teachers and the needs for practice of students. At the same time, sending students to businesses with whom the school has cooperation with to learn, practice and access international approach” - Pham Xuan Khanh – School rector said. Meanwhile, Hanoi Vocational College of Electrical Engineering adopted training programs that combine theory and practice in parallel.
With five key vocational fields, the school and enterprises have signed cooperation in training, then signing the commitments with the parents which guarantee that after graduation students will have a job with a starting salary of 5 million/month.
Flexibility to reality
Student-centered is an approach adopted by many Vietnamese schools. However, according to Nguyen Phuong Chi - Manager of development projects on education and vocational training at the British Council in Vietnam: “The projects on vocational training that we implemented with some Vietnamese vocational schools showed that this activity is only focused in the lesson hours.
In an integrated world, the most important thing is upon graduation, students must attain the skills and standards of knowledge regarding the behavior and attitudes. We need to compare and contrast the standards you learned in Vietnam and internationally to evaluate the level. Achieving outcome standard like other countries is a long-term process, possibly 5-10 years, depending on how fast the Vietnamese schools and education system grow”.
She remarked that Vietnam's vocational schools should pay more attentions to enterprises’ requirements. The clearer the enterprises are about the quality of recruitments, the more aware the schools can get about training needs and content. But now, the link between the school and enterprises is still largely reliant on personal relationships, instead of having a clear mechanism.
While the state is reviewing, editing, finalizing and standardizing the documents, vocational schools can not wait. The schools should be more active and flexible in the cooperation between schools and businesses for mutual benefit. This pro-activeness has been seen in a number of vocational schools, like Principal of Ho Chi Minh Vocational College of Technology said: “For example, this time, the school has no plan of sending students to enterprises for practice. But if the companies have big contracts that require workers, the school can adjust class schedule to send students to help them”.
