Awareness of career is changing
According to a survey by the Departments of Education and Training, this year in many localities, the rate of students who only registered for graduation exam is reasonably high as compared to national high school exam 2015. In some localities such as Ha Giang, Hoa Binh ... the number of student registering for exam in local clusters accounted for more than 70%. In addition, in localities such as Yen Bai, Bac Kan, Dien Bien ... the number of students registering only for graduation exam made up 55%. Similarly, Kon Tum has 35% of candidates registering for graduation exam only.
Not only in mountainous provinces, in Hanoi, the rate of students registering for graduation exam in local clusters also witnessed a sharp increase. Specifically, out of total 66,006 candidates, only 14,716 took part in exam for recognition of graduation only. While in 2015, out of 84,000 contestants, the number of contestants only registering for graduation is 11,000. Mr. Ngo Van Chat, Head Exam Management and Accreditation at Hanoi Department of Education and Training said: “Many schools achieved the rate of students registering for the exam in local cluster higher than 70% such as Einstein high school or Mac Dinh Chi high school with 90% ”.
According to Mr. Quach Van Son, the principal of Sao Bay high school, Kim Boi district (Hoa Binh), this year 90% of students registered for national high school exam only for recognition of graduation. The high rate of unemployed bachelors has greatly affected students psychologically. According to Mr. Son, the fact that teachers need to work many years in order to have their work contract signed and receive low wage made students falter.
Tran Van Hai, a student at Ky Anh high school (Ha Tinh province) this year decided to register only for high school graduation exam despite being a student with good academic performance in his class. Hai explained: “Many university graduates are unemployed, so I will go for vocational training or labor export”. Hai said his sister had to take the university exam for 3 years to qualify for the Faculty of History, Hue Pedagogical University. After graduating in 2012, his sister was unable to find job for 2 years, now she opened a fashion store in the town to make a living.
70% students have job immediately after completing vocational education
Mr. Cao Van Sam, Deputy Director General of the General Directorate of Vocational Training, said that high percentage of students only opted for graduation exam has clearly shown a trend in student career orientation because vocational training has lower cost in which trainees are supported 50% of tuition fee, can find job immediately after graduation. According to the statistics by the General Directorate of Vocational Training, of all students nationwide, 70% of vocational students obtained employment immediately following graduation, there are some vocational fields wherein 100% students are assured to get a job. For jobs with high demand, many enterprises look for candidates when they are still studying in the schools. “Survey at industrial parks shows that there are occupations with income of more than 100 million/month such as high-level 6G welding” Mr. Sam said.
Mr. Sam added, vocational training has become increasingly advantageous because the market share for vocational learners is growing bigger. Businesses are increasing the use of advanced management, modern production technology, thus indirectly workforce only account for 5-6% while remaining workers were vocational learners. Not to mention, ASEAN integration will bring about the opportunities for working overseas with attractive salary of thousand dollars. Mr. Sam also said that having skill will offer students more career opportunities. For example, if one does not work for the businesses, a plumber, barber, manicurist ... can open their own store. Once they earn a sizable amount of capital, if they want to advance their skills, they can easily look for studies at vocational colleges, vocational universities.
The General Directorate of Vocational Training also noted that in recent years the state is pouring investment into vocational schools turning each one of them into a production facility. Along with policies on linkage with the businesses, vocational students are mostly equipped with practice skills so majority of the graduates by the time of graduation are already skilled at work and can adapt to the work easily. Sadly, though vocational school received considerable investment, in previous years, the students still raced for university study which has led many vocational schools into the state of being “idle”.
